California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). After several preliminary attempts, the Young Men's Christian Association (Y.M.C.A.) was established in Spokane Falls, Washington Territory on November 4, 1884. William Markham was its first secretary. The Association, combining interests in social, physical and spiritual welfare among men, grew rapidly in the rapidly expanding trade center of eastern Washington.
